Calcium-related physiological disorders have been associated with the pattern of Ca transport in the plant and its accomulation in the fruit. Transpiration directs the xylem stream, which carries Ca and other nutrients. The low transpiring fruit receive less Ca than the high transpiring leaves. The seasonal evolution of apple surface wax was investigated from 1992 to 1994 in various orchards of Henderson Co., Nc, to evoluate the relatioship between surface wax and nutrient accomulation in fruit. The amnount of surface wax increased with time of extraction denoting that waxes are extracted deeply when fruit are kept longer in contact with the solvent. Time of immersion must be controlled because of its effect on the amount of wax extracted. The seasonal change in fruit weight was described by sigmoidal curves, but the amount of wax per fruit was also variety dependent. Larger fruit did not always have more wax than smaller ones. 'Jonagold' is larger than 'Spur Red Delicious', but both had about the same amount of wax per fruit. The accumulation of wax per unit of fruit surface area was dependent on varieties and years. In 1992, the trend was a decrease in wax per cm2 at the beginning of the growing season, and a stabilization afterward. In 1994, 'Smoothy Golden Delicious' had about the same amount of wax per unit of fruit surface area at the beginning and at the end of the season while 'Jonagold' and 'Spur Red Delicious' continuously accumulated wax in their cuticule. |
